What sized Dallaire, I have a 75% that has a YS in the front and I still have the plan, if not the right size for you (your kit I mean) then contact Paul Farthing who can point you in the right direction if he doesn't have one himself.
But why would you want to use it, those open rockers are like gold amongst the less informed competitors sell it and buy a good engine unless you are really attached of course

G'day The Dalaire kit is 100 or 105% I think. It is the standard size used for Texaco with the OS FS60 in it. I am just interested in the 60 as a curio as it is one of the original four strokes. These days Paul does not use them any more. I think he is using an Enya 53 for Texaco these days. He did say a Saito 56 would go well in an 85% Lanzo Bomber with lots of nitro for Duration or else I think he suggested Jett 40.

As I said before, I am mainly interested in just flying them for fun and not for competition.

I think that Dave Brown or "Brownie" probably has the plan for the Dalaire and I will just have to contact him if I don't find it soon.

Meanwhile I am building my Four Star 40 to put a Saito 62 in. That will complete the Four Star Set and I will have a 40 with a FA-62 in it, a 60 size with a Saito 100 in it and a 120 size with a Saito 150 in it. I do find I fly the smaller ones more as they are easier to transport but the big beast does fly very well.

Cheers

Hi all,
A few questions. 1) I bought a nib 180 from one of our hobby shops. It has maybe 1/2 hour bench time on it. This evening I was running it at our field to fine tune it and it backfired from about 3/4 throttle. What are the possible causes? Also I am using a 16X8 apc running on 15% coolpower two stroke fuel. Should I use a heavier prop for the first while? It tached at 9300 when I was throttling down because it sounded funny. This hasn't happened before to me. I reset the gaps when I got home. The one on the right side was almost completely closed. The other was tight but not as tight as the first. Second question, how long of a break in period is normal for the 180? My 125 took about a year. But then we only have a short flying season.

You are trying to run it too lean

Reset the hs needle. Will try again if the sun ever decides to show itself again. Summer here was great...both days! What rpm should I be aiming for with the prop and fuel I am using? Is 9300 good or should I bump up the pitch?
My 125 just got back from horizon, spinning a 14X10 apc @ 9900-10000. Still a good trail of exhaust. Is this too high? The motor seems happy? Wondering if I should move up to a 14X12.

Mike,

Lean out the low speed needle about 1/8 turn, and see how it runs. A smoke trail on a Saito is usually a sign of being too rich. They leave a little smoke, but not some other engines. Best to not go by smoke trails.

If the low was rich wouldn't the transition from low throttle to wot be a little rough? It transitioned very nicely. Also do the 180's prefer to work a little instead of running at higher rpm? What rpm should I be looking for when the motor has not been in the air yet?

That is too high for the 125, it should run around 9200

9300 is about as fast as you should run the big engine so you have it propped about right.

I have had my Saito 1.80 for about 3 years and have always run a 17 x 8 APC prop. Runs smooth, low idle, great transition, lots of power. It takes a lot of run time to break in the Saito 1.80, but is worth it in the end. I am flying mine in a H9 Spacewalker II 120 ARF. Fly at about 60% throttle and use full power for loops, vertical climbs, wing overs, etc. I have adjusted the valve clearance one time. On the needle settings, I closed the low speed needle about 1/8 turn from factory setting after the first gallon of fuel. Set the High Speed needle about 400 rpm below peak using a tack. NEVER adjust a Saito by ear. It is very misleading. Use the tack. Have fun with this great engine.

I agree with W8YE. I run a 17 X 4W APC on my Saito 1.25 engines. I keep the top end around 9200 rpm, by the tack. Flying the Funtana 125 ARF.

The 125 never turned that hard before I sent it to horizon. Last fall a chunk of the head and the muffler fell off in flight. I sent it to horizon under warranty and when it came back it had a 15% increase in power. Last year on that same prop before this happened it was barely turning 8800. It is mounted on a gp little Toni. I will increase the pitch to a 14X12-14. Not sure what they did but I like it.

I knew of the different types, I didn't know they made that much of a difference in power output.

I have three 125A's

A friend "horse traded" with his brother-in-law for a 125 with no compression and he wanted me to fix it.

When he brought it over, it was a little used 125A with a brand new "B" cylinder on it. But the valves were not seating.

I cleaned the valves and seats and we ran it on the bench on Christmas eve last year. I couldn't believe how well it ran.

The combustion chamber shape is different and the valves are at a different angle.

The Cylinder is actually the FG-20 cylinder that is machined different to work on the 125.

Does anyone know what the drop in rpm is per increase in pitch? The 125 now at 10k has not even been peaked yet. Was breaking in for the new cylinder. When I put the tach to it to peak and turn back it was already at 10. I don't have clearance for a 15" so I have to add pitch. Considering a 14X14. It needs to slow down 800rpm+. It was turning 88-89 before and it was happy. Or would that be too much load?

those high pitch props will unload more up in the air

You can hear them gradually wind on up in rpm in the air when you give it full throttle..

Interesting to hear Paul isn't using the 60 or the 61 any more. He has had a lot of success with those motors but we have been weaning him over to Saito for some time. The 62 with lots of nitro in the ARF Bomber is a good combination for the uniniatied in duration, my mate Jim uses a YS 63 with 45% nitro. I will be using my 62 id an ARC Flybaby (to be finished when I get back from Dalby. Most of the guys up here (Vintagents / QLD people) use the 56 or the 62 in the 85% Bomber. MeI use aGB1 or my 65. I'll let you know how it all goes, I'll be seeing Brownie, Farthing and Condo amongst others. Now theres another convert Condo I gather is playing with both a 65 and a 62 and it will be interesting to see what he comes up with.
Any way I'll be away for 2 weeks lots of practice, running in and tuning engines down at Dalby before the main event, I'll let you know more about the fuels, props and other bits when Iget back

I am trying to install a Saito 182T in a 26% SBACH by Pilot Models. To center the engine shaft within the cowl opening would require cutting a very large, ugly hole in the cowl if the engine is mounted with the carbs on top. If I use two right angle Saito-made exhaust adapters and mount the engine with the carbs beneath the cylinders, i.e. inverted, I can avoid the ugly hole. Will there be any problems with operating the engine in this position? The crankcase breather will be on top in this configuration.

be careful of your tank height. Keep it even with the carb

I will file that one away for future reference should it be required. It was interesting to note the fuel mixes that Horizon recommended. Like the P3 worked on them and the L188C in my time great a/c

I have a 91 in a MOJO 60, a 30 in an eaglet, an 82 in a GP CAP 580, a 100 I just bought for an AW edge 540 and an 82 looking lonely in my bench drawer waiting for a home. Do I qualify?

Can someone tell me the difference between this muffler: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=SAI6574D and this muffler: <a href="http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=SAI6574C">http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=SAI6574C
